Holly Bleasdale, the new hot property of British athletics after her extraordinary pole-vault clearance of 4.87 metres at the weekend, has an important training session in store on Monday.

Having ascended to the giddy heights of fourth on the all-time world list using a pole measuring 4.45 metres long, Bleasdale is hoping to raise the bar even higher when, for the first time in her short vaulting career, she takes to the practice runway at Manchester’s SportCity clutching a pole measuring 4.60m.

It is the longest of any of the poles used by women on the international circuit, requiring swift runway speed and powerful upper-body strength to gain the necessary leverage, but if she can perfect the technique in time for this summer’s Olympics, the sky could really be her limit.

Photographs and video footage of Bleasdale’s 4.87m clearance in Lyon, a height that would have won her the gold at last summer’s World Championships, showed she had plenty of room to spare as she sailed over the bar, and with an extra 15cm of pole length, the mathematics suggest something remarkable could soon be about to unfold.

“When I look at some of the pictures from the weekend, I’m pushing off the pole about 60 or 70 centimetres,” she says. “So, if you add another 15cm to the end of the pole and add 70 on top of that, you get to…”

Bleasdale tails off into silence, then giggles when reminded of the answer: 5.30m. The women’s pole vault world records stand at 5.06m outdoors and 5.00m indoors and both of them are owned by Yelena Isinbayeva, arguably the most successful female athlete on the planet.

Surely the great Russian is not about to have her records snatched away by a 20 year-old from Chorley, Lancashire, who had not even taken up pole vaulting when she won the second of her two Olympic gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Bleasdale prefers not to go there, insisting that she sets herself no height targets and that her priority is becoming a consistent 4.70-plus vaulter. Her French coach, Julien Raffalli-Ebezant, who spotted her potential at a try-out session in October 2008, has been predicting for some time that his young prodigy is capable of becoming the greatest of all.

VIDEO: watch Bleasdale’s record breaking jump

“When I was jumping about 4.30 he was always joking about how I’d one day be able to break the world record and I just thought, ‘Whatever’. I didn’t really believe him. But at the end of every year he’s given me a target for the next year and I’ve always done it.

“At the end of 2010 he said I’d be jumping 4.70 in 2011. I said, ‘You can’t just say that’, but then I did it. At the start of this year he told me what I was capable of jumping. I’m starting to believe it.”

Bleasdale’s great leap forward in Lyon, which added 16cm to her personal best and took her straight to the top of the world rankings, was all the more impressive given that it was achieved off a shortened, 14-stride run-up, though she admits she will need every inch of her normal 16-stride approach to generate sufficient speed when she picks up a 4.60m pole on Monday.

The adjustments that will be required to her technique are not without their dangers, but the reward justifies the risk.

“My coach initially thought that because it’s Olympic year, we shouldn’t change anything,” she says. “The pole will bend in a different way so it might take a bit of getting used to.

“Julien was humming and hah-ing about it but he’s asked six or seven coaches and they’ve all said, ‘Holly needs to go off longer poles or else she’s not going to be able to jump much higher’.”

The plan is to introduce the longer pole to competition next month, first in Bydgoszcz, Poland, on Feb 8, before she competes with it at the UK Indoor Trials in Sheffield on Feb 11-12.

The real test will come at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul in March when most of her rivals will be in action, Isinbayeva included.

There was a time when Bleasdale might have been intimidated by the prospect of taking on the Russian, but not any more.

“When I started out, Yelena was always an idol and a role model,” she says. “But now I can’t really idolise her knowing that I want to beat her. Although she’s really good, I’m up there with her now and I want to beat her now, not idolise her.” Impressive stuff from a young woman who is going up in the world.

RENO, Nevada--Though it’s only the first meet of the young 2012 season, University of Washington alum and current American record holder Brad Walker isn’t letting people write him off yet.

The 2007 IAAF world champion opened his 2012 campaign with a jump of 19-0 1/4 (5.80m) to win the men’s elite section at the UCS Pole Vault Summit at the Reno Livestock Event Center.

Walker got off to an inauspicious start, running through the pit at his opening height of 18-1 1/4 (5.52m), before clearing the bar on his second attempt.

Walker easily cleared 18-5 1/4 (5.62m) on his first attempt, then cleared 19-0 1/4 (5.80m) on his first attempt, before missing all three attempts at 19-4 3/4 (5.91m), which would have been a 2012 indoor world leader.

Courtesy of YouTube, here is video of Walker’s jump:

Walker’s jump is the second best in the world so far this season, only behind Russia’s Dmitry Starodubtsev, who cleared 19-4 1/4 (5.90m) on December 29th. Starodubtsev, who finished fifth in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, also has a clearance of 19-0 1/4 set on January 14th.

Since setting the American record at the Nike Prefontaine Classic in 2008, Walker’s career has seen a series of ups and downs, including no-heighting in the qualifying round at the Olympics in Beijing, and a crash at the 2009 Herculis meeting in Monaco, in which he was injured, and couldn’t defend his world title in Berlin a few weeks later.

Walker’s 2011 best was 19-2 (5.84m) in a low-key meet at the US Olympic training center in Chula Vista, California.

University of Washington grad Scott Roth, the 2011 NCAA indoor and outdoor champion, along with training partner Jason Colwick, the 2010 NCAA champ from Rice, were scheduled to compete in Friday’s elite pole vault competition, but were unable to leave Seattle due to the snowy conditions.

When Holly Bleasdale cleared 4.71m off a shortened approach at a low-key meeting last month, it hinted that there was a lot more to come from the young Blackburn pole vaulter. Tonight in Lyon, the 20-year-old lived up to that promise.

She opened with first-time clearances at 4.44m, 4.60m and a UK record of 4.72m. She improved it again with another first-time clearance of 4.80m to regain the world-leading mark. But she wasn’t done there – Bleasdale raised the bar to 4.87m and nailed it on her third vault to set her third UK record of the night.

Bleasdale then set the bar to 5.01m – a would-be world indoor record – but it was not to be. That did not dent her spirits though, as her winning 4.87m performance is a mark that ranks her at No.2 on the world indoor all-time list. It is also a world indoor under-23 best.

Only world record-holder Yelena Isinbayeva has ever gone higher indoors, while only two other athletes have ever bettered that mark outdoors. Bleasdale now ranks ahead of world champion Fabiana Murer on the world all-time list.

At the meeting in Lyon, Bleasdale led a British 1-2-3, as former UK record-holder Kate Dennison finished second with 4.34m, and Sally Peake cleared the same mark in third. Bleasdale’s training partner Andrew Sutcliffe also smashed his PB to win the men’s B string competition with 5.54m to go fifth on the UK all-time indoor list.

Volgograd, Russia – The Governor’s Cup in Volgograd is one of the most popular annual track and field tournaments of the Russian indoor season.

At today’s edition the focus of public’s attention was the Pole Vault runway and landing area. A lot of fans of Yelena Isinbayeva, including her parents and close friends came to the indoor hall of the Institute of Physical Culture and Sport in Volgograd to support the latest competition of the World record holder and reigning Olympic champion, her first of 2012.

It’s rather rare for the inhabitants of this large city on the banks of Volga where Isinbayeva these days has her permanent residence to see her competing in Volgograd. The hall was overcrowded with the spectators in high expectation amid rumours that in one of her practice jumps their heroine had cleared 5m.

In the competition itself Isinbayeva’s first effort at 4.70 was impeccable, and turned out to be enough for her to win the 2012 Governor’s Cup. Her following three attempts at 4.80 were rather good but not successful, with Isinbayeva changing the poles twice. May be it was uneasy for her technically but at least physically she looked quite well prepared. The run-off wasn’t that good but Isinbayeva and her coach Yevgeniy Trofimov are well concentrated on the new Olympic season, and confirmed she needed more competition experience.
